Katja Schwalenberg linocut book

Sag Einfach Ja oder Nein!

I found this lovely book of bright, bold linocuts by Katja Schwalenberg in Material and just had to buy it! In a way these linocuts embody what I have been striving for in some of my recent work – a sense of freedom and a childlike (even childish) playfulness. The images are colourful faces, birds and plants. Each is printed in just two blocks but the clever combinations of colours makes them sing out from the page.

The book is printed in an edition of 500 by Lubok Verlag, a project based in Leipzig, Germany, set up by Christoph Ruckhaberle. The books are printed on a letterpress in runs of up to 1500 to make them affordable. The aim is to follow in the Russian tradition of Lubok, a popularist folk art movement which brought woodcut images and stories to the masses.

Even the cover is linocut…
