Gandhi portrait for The Folio Society

This is an illustration I did recently for Gandhi’s autobiography, to be published later this year by the Folio Society. It is of course a linocut. You can see the preparatory stages in cutting the lino below. The final illustration for the book cover will be two-colour and in the classic Folio Society look with cloth-bound covers. I wanted to capture some of Gandhi’s complexity and his almost cheeky smile (I was told not to make him too smiley!).
A close-up of the lino block showing the carved lines and one of my linocutting tools in the background. I use Swiss-made Pfeil tools which were expensive but worth the investment as I have used them quite a bit now.
